Then why not join our volunteers at one of our various production centres in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria or Mamelodi to narrate and proof-read both fiction and non-fiction books.
Contact a production centre near you to arrange for an introductory meeting where you'll be guided through an audition so that we can determine which style of literature you'd be most suited to read. All narrators undergo a period of training as proof-readers or editors on the computerized digital recording system that we use. Depending on how quickly you learn to use the system and on your reading abilities, you'll then advance to actual recording in the studio.
As a narrator, you will be allocated a book which you will read from start to finish. This usually takes a couple of months, however some narrators like to come in for more than one session per week so that they can finish their books more quickly. Recording and proofing sessions are usually 2 hours long and the majority of our narrators and proof-readers plan for at least one session per week.
Currently our working sessions are between 08h00 – 16h00. However in the future we may be looking to extend these times to accommodate more volunteers with work commitments wanting after hours sessions. We also welcome retired teachers and lecturers with good reading skills to volunteer as "home-readers", converting our student members' educational material into the spoken word.
As sighted readers, your volunteering services will be valued by many thousands. Thank you for gifting our members with your abilities.
We desperately need you to volunteer if you have reading abilities in Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi or Sesotho. Join us in developing the inherent potential in all our young children. Together lets improve literacy levels and create a nation of avid readers.
Tape Aids NPC is a CIPC registered non-profit company associated with Tape Aids For The Blind that converts printed text into human narrated audio, producing high quality recordings in the MP3 digital audio format.
Narrating and proof-reading is done in our nationwide Tape Aids studios by our skilled volunteers, recruited from various diverse professions. We produce commercial audio book versions of printed books for publishers and interpret and explain complex tables, charts and graphs in annual reports, policies, training manuals and brochures for corporates, government departments and municipalities.
By transforming parliamentary reports, acts and policies into easily understood audio, and by converting metro newspapers so that citizens can appreciate service delivery plans and access advertised job opportunities and skills development training, employees and citizens can read while multitasking or commuting, cooking or gardening.
We offer multiple mother tongue language options: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Setswana and Sesotho.
We also provide bulk copying services of our master recording productions onto CD or USB memory sticks, labelling, branding, packaging and distributing if required.
